One of the fastest growing trends in America is the use of shoji doors. These are Japanese doors that utilize Asian woods and rice paper for their design. They are usually divided into a number of panes like a window pane. These panes hold rice paper instead of glass and some have designs printed on the rice paper. They are sold in kits that contain the upper and lower track plus the left and right door jamb. They are sliding doors and are light weight due to their construction. They can be single sided or double sided meaning the framing of the panes is seen either on one side or both.
Shoji doors are becoming popular for their use in room dividers as well as for closet doors. Many people are using these doors as a replacement for their old sliding doors. They are not only great doors for a closet but also in making your closet feel more like part of the room instead of a separate entity. The Japanese use these as well as shoji screens to divide up their homes. Many traditional Japanese homes are simply open areas. The shoji doors and screens help them obtain privacy without the constrictions of walls.
Drill Bit Kit
The prices of shoji doors vary from one store to the next. Custom shoji doors are the most expensive because they are generally hand made to fit the dimensions you specify. They are great for replacement doors of almost any kind but are intended for indoor use. Although they are made with rice paper, there are some shoji doors that are used for entrances to home and are fitted with glass panes instead of rice paper. Of course the prices of these doors are much more than the ones used on the interior of a home for obvious reasons.
Before you purchase your shoji doors make sure you have the dimensions of the doorway where they will be mounted. This is important because you will be attaching the tracking and the left and right jambs to the existing walls around the doorway. You should consult with a local retailer to find out how to measure for these doors just to be safe. Once you have chosen your shoji doors, you may want to have a helper to help you install the kit and keep it level.
Installing shoji doors is relatively easy. You simply need a drill, level and a screw driver along with the door kit. Align the bottom track with the door facing making sure it is center. Drill the holes for the screw along the floor and secure it to the floor. Place one jamb along the wall and make sure it is level. Drill the holes for the screws and secure it in place. Repeat this for the other jamb and then place the top track along the top of the door facing making sure it is level. Drill the holes and secure it. Attach the doors with the rollers and your door is finished.
